What is Kava?

Kava is a calming, alcohol-free drink pressed from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, a small shrub native to the islands of the South Pacific. People there have gathered around it for more than 3,000 years, and its appeal hasn't changed: it eases you into a relaxed, sociable, clear-headed calm without a drop of alcohol.

The traditional method is simple and still in use across the islands. Ground root is kneaded into water until it releases its character, then strained and served. The finest pours come from noble kava, cultivars prized for a smooth, balanced, dependable effect rather than the harsher feel of lesser varieties.

These days kava reaches well past the classic root-and-water shell. You'll find ready-to-drink cans, concentrated shots, tinctures, and capsules, all pulled from the same root, so it fits however you want it: settled in at the bar, grabbed on the way out, or folded into a daily wellness habit.

What Does Kava Feel Like?

Kava tends to leave you calm, loose, and easier in your own skin, socially open without dulling your focus or clarity. We call it a chill, not a high or a buzz. Our advice: start slow and give it a little room to work.

You'll usually notice it within 10 to 20 minutes, and it settles in for about 2 to 3 hours. Most people describe a quiet shift more than a jolt. Stress loosens its grip, conversation comes easier, and your body feels grounded and at ease. And unlike alcohol, kava won't cloud your judgment or leave you with a hangover the next morning.

Kava Safety, Dosage, and Overdoing It

Kava is considered safe for most adults when used responsibly - especially when prepared from traditional noble varieties, which have been consumed in the South Pacific for centuries and are valued for their balanced, predictable effects. But like anything, too much can make the experience unpleasant, and it’s not suitable for everyone.

If you have any medical conditions, take prescription medications, are pregnant or nursing, or are unsure how kava might interact with your health, you should speak with a qualified healthcare professional before consuming it.

Overdoing it can cause negative and uncomfortable effects. Most who overconsume simply end up on a couch wondering why they didn’t stop sooner.

The safest approach is moderation: give your body time to feel the effects before consuming more and always listen to how you feel. Never mix kava with alcohol, sedatives, or anything that affects the liver or central nervous system.

Kava Legality in The US

Kava is legal in the United States and can be sold, purchased, and consumed in all 50 states. Although there are legal age restrictions on kava, Ohana serves kava to guests 18 and older. Some of our other drinks require 21+ age due to restrictions.

Kava is regulated as a dietary supplement rather than a controlled substance, and it’s widely available in lounges, cafés, and wellness spaces across the country as an alcohol-free social beverage.

And if you’re planning to travel, you can usually bring kava within the U.S. without issue, but it’s smart to check customs regulations if flying internationally.
